Dangers of Synthetically Generated Voices

A synthetically generated voice, or a deepfake voice, is an AI-created voice that sounds like a real person but isn’t. It's made by training algorithms on recordings of human speech and is used for things like customer service automation and voiceovers. However, it can be dangerous because it can be used for scams, impersonations, or spreading fake information, making it hard to trust what you hear.

Brand Sabotage

Synthetic voices can be weaponized to impersonate key figures in your company, like the CEO or spokesperson. Imagine a deepfake audio of your CEO announcing a phony merger or making an offensive statement. The damage to brand reputation can be instant and devastating, spiraling into loss of consumer trust and even stock plummets.

Voice Phishing (Vishing)

With advanced AI, fraudsters can clone voices to trick employees or customers into divulging sensitive information. A quick call from “the boss” might lead to unauthorized wire transfers, leaking trade secrets, or compromising customer data. These vishing attacks are becoming harder to detect, making them a significant threat to businesses.

Misinformation and Disinformation

Synthetic voices can be used to spread false information that appears to come from credible sources within your organization. This could be as simple as a fake press release or as complex as a doctored interview. Such incidents can lead to market manipulation, public relations disasters, and a significant erosion of consumer confidence.

Employee and Customer Manipulation

Synthetic voices can be used to manipulate both employees and customers. Whether it’s a fake HR call asking for personal information or a customer service interaction that wasn’t actually handled by your company, the potential for exploitation is enormous. This could result in financial losses, data breaches, and long-term damage to relationships.

Intellectual Property Theft

Synthetically generated voices can mimic the tone, style, and inflection of well-known personalities. If your business relies on distinctive voice branding (think voice assistants, ads, or automated services), these voices could be cloned and used by competitors or malicious actors, diluting your brand’s unique identity.

Exploitation of Vulnerabilities

Cybercriminals can use synthetic voices to exploit known vulnerabilities in your business processes. A perfectly timed, convincing call from “IT” could trick an employee into granting unauthorized system access, resulting in data breaches or ransomware attacks.

The Solution: Voice Verity®

ValidSoft’s Voice Verity® Deepfake detection is immediately available in multiple deployment configurations, including: Cloud, Private Cloud, On-premise, Hosted and SaaS. Voice Verity® is not a biometric solution, it requires no user enrollments, no consent workflows, and does not hold or store any Personally Identifiable Information or “personal data” under GDPR or similar privacy frameworks, so can be deployed and operational immediately. For users of existing voice biometric solutions with no / inadequate deepfake detection capability, ValidSoft’s Deepfake detection solution can run as a standalone service in parallel, providing a strong and additional layer of protection for any enterprise.

Voice Verity® provides a comprehensive solution for the detection and prevention of Robocalls, Voice Cloning and other use cases emerging from Generative AI. Deepfake audio is here to stay, and exploitation, both good and bad, will increase. Staying ahead of the threat is key, and ValidSoft can help any organization gain a competitive advantage and protect its reputation and its customers by leading the field in the detection and prevention of such attacks.

How ValidSoft Stops Deepfakes

ValidSoft has been at the forefront of synthetic speech detection for years, and developed its first such applications to strengthen its voice biometric systems in around 2012. ValidSoft collaborates with some of the world’s leading academic institutions on cutting-edge research and development.

Our anti-spoof detection capabilities are based on years of experience and research in speech science, signal processing and voice biometrics leveraging large-scale Deep Neural Network (DNN) techniques.

Users of ValidSoft’s latest-generation of voice biometric technologies are already protected against deepfake audio, as Deepfake detection is integral to those solutions. However, for the first time, enterprises can now deploy Deepfake detection separately, as a fully standalone solution.

Stay Ahead of Fraud: Protect Your Business with Voice Verity®. Voice Verity® has been designed to feed into fraud prevention eco-systems, providing additional classification data to improved detection accuracy. Our leading-edge technology has been designed to enhance fraud prevention across a number multiple use cases, environments and challenges “out-of-the-box”

Robocall Detection
Voice Cloning Detection
“Public” Figures
“Average” Consumers
Robocall Detection

Detecting low-grade synthetically created audio generated for the purpose of mass calling for data harvesting.

Voice Cloning Detection

Detection of low, mid and high quality audio generated using Generative AI technology for the purpose of cloning individual speakers.

“Public” Figures

Considered notable figures of interest (e.g. high-net worth individuals or executives). At risk for targeted attacks with the potential for large amounts of good quality audio publicly available.

“Average” Consumers

Generally considered probable for low-value, mass-style attacks with little publicly available audio for training.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s required?

Immediately available to all enterprises, and the technology is already deployed in real world live deployments with some of the world’s largest financial services institutions.

What type of deepfakes can be identified?

ValidSoft’s Voice Verity® is trained to detect typical artifacts that are generated by synthetic voice generation algorithms, such as standard Text-to-Speech (TTS), Voice Conversion, and in particular recent Generative-AI based tools.
