With the advent of this new deepfake landscape, the situation that we find ourselves in today is analogous to the discovery of the first mass global personal computer virus named Vienna, which appeared as far back as 1987. When an infected file was run, the Vienna virus searched for an uninfected file and would infect it by overwriting the first few bytes with instructions and impossible values that caused a restart of the computer. In the same year, German computer security expert Bernd Robert Fix came up with a program to get rid of the Vienna virus.

And so, this led to the birth of anti-virus software which we know today, which is deemed mandatory for all personal computers and devices to this day. It is a constant arms race between the virus makers and the anti-virus software solution providers.

Deepfakes in the hacker’s domain are just the current manifestation of the latest forms of viruses, and deepfake detection is the modern extension to such forms of “virus” detection, safeguarding not just our computers but our identities and truths.
